New WAWH Award

In 2009, WAWH will award the first Gita Chaudhuri Prize. Thanks to the generous support from the family of Nupur Chaudhuri, the prize is an annual $1000 prize that recognizes the best monograph about rural women, from any era and place in the world, published by a WAWH member. The submission deadline will be January 15, 2009. More information is available here .

New Graduate Student Prize

Beginning in 2009, WAWH will recognize the outstanding paper presented by a graduate student at its annual conference. The recipient will receive recognition at the conference and a $100 prize.

Graduate students who wish to be considered should send a copy of the paper they will present at the 2009 conference, as an e-mail attachment, to the chair of the Graduate Student Prize Committee. The criteria for judgment will include originality of conception and analysis, convincing and sufficient supporting evidence, and clarity of presentation.

The committee will judge the presented paper (normally 10-12 pages) rather than any longer version from which the conference presentation may be derived. The presenter must also still submit a copy to the commentator of their panel.

Deadline for paper submissions is April 6, 2009. Late papers will not be considered. More information will be posted as it becomes available.

Online System

WAWH now has an online system which can be used to become a member, renew membership, make a donation, or register for the conference. Click here to go to the login page. Current members should have received login information. Those making a donation only do not need to become a member.

The Western Association of Women Historians was founded in 1969 to promote the interests of women historians both in academic settings and in the field of history generally.

Drawing scholars from the Western states, the WAWH is the largest of the regional women's historical associations in the U.S.

The WAWH encourages the participation of academic historians and independent scholars, and welcomes literary scholars and art, theater, and film specialists.
