This conference is being held to commemorate the centenary of the granting of the parliamentary vote in Britain to certain categories of women aged 30 and over on 6th February 1918.
We invite established scholars, postgraduate researchers, independent scholars, museum curators, local history groups and practitioners from a wide range of disciplines researching women’s suffrage in Britain or elsewhere in the world, to contribute to the conference.
Proposals should be submitted via email to june.purvis@port.ac.uk by Friday 2nd February 2018 at the latest.

- nineteenth and twentieth-century campaigns for women’s suffrage
- biographies and autobiographical writing
- leadership and women’s suffrage
- political activism and political parties
- tactics and methods of campaigners
- race, class, age, sexuality and disability
- the arts, the avant garde and women’s suffrage
- film and media
- social reform
- nationalism
- religion
- women’s suffrage in the regions
- men, gender and women’s suffrage
- the writing of suffrage history
- winning the vote
- war, peace and women’s suffrage
- reactions to the 1918 Act
- impact of the 1918 Act on inter-war politics and beyond
- women and citizenship.
Proposals
- Individual
- 20 minute paper proposals should involve no more than a 200-300 word abstract, plus a short biography
- Panel
- 90 minute proposals should include a session title, a named organiser as Contact (who will be responsible for communicating with the remaining panel members), a session abstract of not more than 200-300 words and up to three 20 minute paper abstracts of 200-300 words. If the panel organiser is also proposed as a Chair and not presenting, please provide a short biography
- Roundtable/Workshop/Object-Handling
- 90 minute proposal should include a themed title, a named organiser as contact (who will be responsible for communicating with the remaining panel members), an abstract of 500 words and brief biographies of all panellists
- A Dramatic Performance
- Up to 60 minute proposal should include a themed title, a named organiser as contact and an abstract of 500 words plus a brief biography of the performer/s
- Posters
- Proposals should be no more than 200-300 words long and include a short biography
Authors/panel organisers will be notified regarding acceptance of their proposal after all submissions have been reviewed. Proposals should be submitted via email to june.purvis@port.ac.uk by Friday 2nd February 2018 at the latest.
It is expected that a publication, to be edited by June Purvis and June Hannam, will be forthcoming from a selection of the papers. Please indicate whether you wish your presentation to be considered for this.
