What types of sessions are you considering?
Traditional Panels: Consists of 3-4 individual paper presentations with some point of commonality, a panel chairperson who introduces the panelists, keeps time and coordinates the group communications, and a commenter who concludes with summative remarks. The session is then open for Q&A from the audience.
Roundtables: With 3-5 participants, roundtables are exciting, interactive discussions on historical, pedagogical, relevant political, or professional issues. Unlike panel presentations, roundtable presenters do not read written papers. Instead, they share brief and focused remarks and then engage in a dynamic conversation with fellow presenters, the moderator, and the audience. Each roundtable begins with a brief introduction by the roundtable's moderator, proceeds to the moderated conversation between presenters, and then opens up for a broader discussion with the audience.
Individual Papers: Preference will be given to complete panels, and chances of acceptance are higher when papers are submitted with a panel. However, individual papers will be placed on panels if space and relevancy permits. We strongly encourage participants interested in submitting an individual paper to first seek out fellow presenters for collaboration in a panel using the collaboration spreadsheet link.
Graduate Student Posters: A research-based poster presented by someone enrolled in a graduate degree program. Posters accepted for presentation will automatically be included in the competition for the Perry Award.
Book Launch & Reading: The WAWH opens the conference on Thursday night by celebrating our authors who have recently published books. Those selected to present should be prepared to give a short introduction, read a passage from their book, and engage in Audience Q&A. Consider submitting if your book was published between January 2026 and March 1, 2027. See the application for more details. Space is limited; application does not guarantee participation.
Workshops*: Interactive and often hands-on sessions designed to teach the audience something new about research, teaching, public engagement, or the broader work of historical scholarship. Workshops are not panel presentations.
Novelty Session*: Do you have an innovative, out-of-the-box idea for a session? Pitch it!
*Please Note: The WAWH does not accept workshops or presentations designed to promote a business, influencer, motivational speaker, or the like (no matter how wonderful and dynamic you are). This is a history conference for professionals interested in the work that historians do. Please keep this in mind when submitting an application. Applications outside of that scope will not be considered.
What about awards?
